Artrageous!29

Yesterday was the Artrageous!29 of 2015 and I got to say it had some good and bad element to this years location. I first thing I got to say that doesn't really have anything to do with the event but when waiting for the transportation we had to wait in the snow while last year we had to wait in the rain. And then the event happened on the 28th of March when it is called the Artrageous!29 when last year was the Artrageous!28 when it happened on March 29th. "Weird huh??"

Anyways one word that I could say about this event would be that it is huge. Not the event but the location itself. You could say that it has the similar look of a warehouse and not so clutter together so you see everything in one look. This meant that it was easier to move around and getting from place to place. The down side to it that being a large place makes it seem that there isn't a much as last year mainly food. From my last post, I tried to captured the different variety of food and culture when it was probably more a sampling of appetizers. The one thing that I got to try were the vegan spring roll meal box while we were service a limited pasta and nacho chips. But hey may be this is just my perception of a starving artist and nothing else.

The Digital illustration, animation, 3-D structuring and the shadow box exhibit

This time the pastel portraits were located in the middle of the building instead of the corner, meaning people are instantly drawn to us while we are limited the amount of portraits because we can't hang the finished them up on a wall like last year.

This was the staff room and usually where we got our food

These were this years portraits, including the practice one below

The final deconstruction of the Artrageous!29 just to see how big it goes on to when it is emptied out. As for the artwork, I believe we sold a lot more piece of art, even the large 40 by 40 pieces which is amazing. Hopefully next year I could submit something to be auctioned off or something.

Overall great time with my friends and producing artwork in the process. Amazing night and now I have to motivate myself to get homework done for Monday and Tuesday.

Book Cover Process

So far, I have been enjoying this book cover process even though it took forever to figure out the background. Originally there wasn't going to be a background but simple dark tone so the focus was only on the focused characters. However, it was suggested to put some kind of environment or story element behind the characters. I'm still writing the story synopsis to this so I'll post it up soon, but for now put in your own story.

One minute it is sunny, another minute it is constant raining. I want to be relief this week because I have a solid idea about what classes I want to get into but I haven't been able to confirm it with my advisor. The classes I want to do next semester is the Illustration III course, teaching more of the application and style of illustration. Then I am returning to my interesting in type by taking Typography II and a brand new course "More than Words, which is a collaboration of typography and illustration together. I am also continue my life drawing teaching with my friend with Advance Drawing. Then for liberal art class will be Psychology course and the Art of Africa to return to history class.

Coming up soon will be another year of the Artrageous art auction.

Fooling with Illustrator & Shout out!!

I want to say a quick shout out to my good friend Antonio who has finally graduated college. I hope he will enjoy his trip far out and my door is always open for him to come visit. I just can't wait to see his impression in the world, I just hope it is in his own outline :)

Best wishes to you!

(as for these below, I am figure out a style and the basic tools for this program so I have been practicing off other artists. The own original creations were the iceman, cupcake character, and the desert silhouette cover )

That time of the Month (aka Housing selection)

Currently I'm feeling bit less stressed from previous posts, with the snow slowly melting away and fall classes are being declared is a big relief. As for housing, I pray that I can be with my friends next semester. For my junior year, most likely that I going to be stuck in front of studio desk making my artwork much more better so it would be great to be a studio space surrounded by friends I can easily be with. Again, I hoping this happens as long as the housing selection or available floors for us.

So for a week without life drawing, I seem to doing pretty good improvements, being more structured and being more thoughtful when applying tones. One of the suggestions I need to start using is being more painter like, having more passages of tone than using mark making lines for tone. But so far, I am much more happy with my approach with ink, it still an experience and I have to do more risky exploration for rendering.

Next, although this isn't completely done this is the illustration that I kept posting over break, the monster being delicate playing tea party. The issues that need to be worked on is mainly the background, small features of the monster and the girl and adding more value. Acrylic was an interesting approach since in the past it was rare for something good appealing to come out. I mainly thought of this as a gouache painting, just with more opportunities to blend paint strokes and colors. So far it has been considered as an solid, concrete illustration from what I got so far.

Now our next assignment is kind of cool, which is to design a book cover in the acrylic medium. But not any kind of children book cover but a "Pulp Fiction" novel. By definition, the term pulp fiction describes the book being produced on low quality paper used between cover. However, it is the genre of fiction writing during the early nineteen hundreds, mainly science-fiction, hardboiled detective stories, action-adventure and mysteries. Most commonly the covers would depicting something shocking or interesting against all the other books. This list from attractive protagonists, gruesome monster, nazis, bondage, murder, aliens, exotic setting, anything that could represent the current environment the readers could exist into. Here are a sample but you should look up pulp fiction covers yourself, especially the manly ones.

Anyways, here are the thumbnails to all the possible book covers (which was really fun to do since it was illustrating a sequence from the stories or portraying the characters). It was a lot more enjoyable when we had to take references for the cover, where we had models posing in ridiculous positions. I'll post the synopsis to the story later on but I kind of were between two stories.
